Wudu is more than just washing, it’s a moment of spiritual readiness, preparing your body and soul to stand before Allah. In this guide, you’ll learn how to perform wudu step by step, based on the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah.
How to make Wudu (Ablution) for Salah
Performing Wudu (وضوء) is a beautiful and important act of worship that prepares a Muslim for Salah (prayer). It is both a physical and spiritual purification. Allah says in the Qur’an: “O you who believe! When you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe over your heads and wash your feet up to the ankles.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:6)
Reflection to Think About: How often do we pause and feel the beauty of cleansing ourselves before speaking to Allah?
First, we must know that Salah is the second pillar of Islam
The Steps to Perform Wudu
1. Start with the Intention (Niyyah)
Every act of worship begins with the right intention. Before performing wudu, make a sincere intention in your heart that you are doing it to please Allah and to prepare for prayer. This intention does not have to be spoken aloud.
Action Point: Each time you make wudu, remind yourself why you are doing it, not out of habit, but out of love and obedience to your Creator.
2. Say ‘Bismillah’ (In the Name of Allah)
Begin your wudu by saying “Bismillah.” The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “There is no wudu for the one who does not mention the Name of Allah upon it.”

Tip to Apply: Train yourself to say “Bismillah” even if you’re in a hurry. It adds barakah (blessing) to the whole action.
3. Wash the Hands
Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, starting with the right hand. This removes anything unclean and prepares you for the rest of the wudu.
Reflection to Consider: These hands that we wash , how do we use them during the day? Are they used in ways pleasing to Allah?
4. Rinse the Mouth and Nose
Take water into your mouth and rinse it three times. Then, inhale water lightly into your nose and blow it out three times. These steps cleanse your mouth and nose from impurities.
Action Point: Practice this step properly and don’t rush. The Prophet ﷺ never skipped it, even in cold weather.
5. Wash the Face
Wash your entire face from the top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin and from ear to ear, three times.
Tip to Apply: As you wash your face, remember that on the Day of Judgment, your face will shine from the traces of wudu
6. Wash the Arms
Wash your arms up to the elbows, starting with the right arm, then the left. Each arm is washed three times.
Reflection to Think About: Imagine your arms glowing with light because of this simple act. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“My Ummah will come on the Day of Judgment with bright faces, hands, and feet from the traces of wudu.”
(Sahih Bukhari and Muslim)
7. Wipe the Head (Masah)
Wet your hands and wipe over your head once, from front to back and back to front. Then, wipe your ears with the same wet hands.
Dua to Say Silently: “O Allah, make this wudu a means of light and guidance.”
8. Wash the Feet
Wash both feet up to the ankles three times, starting with the right. Make sure water reaches between the toes.
Action Point: Don’t rush. Ensure the heels are fully washed, as the Prophet ﷺ warned: “Woe to the heels from the fire!”
(Sahih Bukhari)
9. Say the Supplication After Wudu
After finishing wudu, say:
“Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lahu wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh.”
Translation: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.”
(Muslim)
Bonus Tip: Whoever says this after wudu will have all eight doors of Jannah open for them. (Sahih Muslim)
Conclusion
Perform wudu is not just about cleanliness; it is a moment to refresh our Iman, prepare for Salah, and connect spiritually with Allah. By doing wudu correctly and mindfully, we earn great rewards and build a stronger relationship with our Creator.
Final Reflection: Next time you perform wudu, do it slowly, with intention, and feel the peace that comes from this simple, yet powerful act of worship.
